Rom Tutorial Series: Romneto's hands doing the Rom

Over the years many people have requested videos of someone's hands executing Magneto's Rom Infinite. While there have been other videos that show a person's finger/hand movements that perform the Rom, none have had both an optimal camera angle (for viewing button/joystick inputs)and a picture-in-picture displaying the actual gameplay synched with the joystick/button inputs.

As part of the upcoming 'Rom Tutorial Series' Romneto created a superb visual example of how to do the Rom Infinite. This video is meant to help those who want to learn the Rom, so if anyone has any questions about a part of the video or the Rom Infinite in general, then feel free to ask.

Romneto Interview

Just this past weekend, Romneto was interviewed by youtube user 'Darth48076'for a show called Fighter's Fury. Topics of interest include: How MvC2 stands apart from other fighting games, the ways online play changes the MvC2 experience, the tier system of ranking teams and characters, and reflections on The Danger Room. There are some great comedic moments and the questions were insightful and provided ample opportunity for Romneto to display his personality and perspectives on MvC2 as well as other relevant topics.

MvC2 Online: Death is not the end

This is an excerpt from a match between Romneto (MSP) and Taiji (MSP) played about two weeks ago. This is not an illusion or a video splice to give the effect of a K.O. on Psylocke. She actually was killed and that is why you can see the K.O. show up onscreen. In this case, the game adjusted itself inexplicably and provided the opportunity for one of the most impressive Psylocke comebacks ever witnessed. Taiji must have had a phoenix down stashed in his MAS stick to recover from the psyshot of death. With the advent of Online play, MvC2 has experienced a sligtht genre shift.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 Online is both a fighting game and an role playing game (RPG).

MvC2 Money Match: Romneto vs Phocus The Rematch

About a month after the initial money match (Romneto won 7-3), these two competitors faced off again. This time the format was first to ten wins for $50. Although there were less people in the crowd at Syn's place, they did a great job of creating that Marvel hype that we all know and love. This time all matches were recorded, and there were some highly entertaining moments. Don't forget to stay tuned at the conclusion of the matches. There is an Aftermath video that displays the post-match reactions of the players and the crowd. This is what Marvel drama is all about!

Both players are ready to go for part 3 at the next Syn session.

Counter-Trijump

The counter-trijump is an advanced MvC2 technique that can give you a fighting chance after flying screen and wake up situations. It's not something you can depend upon all the time but it is very useful. Going from a defensive position to an offensive one, this technique (when used properly) can have a major impact on the battle.

It seems that a regular jump is less than a frame in MvC2. If someone can find me data on this, that would be helpful. At match start, if both players do the switch trick glitch, and Magneto starts with a c lk and you hold up, you can effectively evade the c lk. Magneto's c lk is one frame.

Refer to this frame data chart for more technical information.

On wake up, if you hold up you then you usually can evade low attacks. While you are in the air then immediately input an airdash downwards with an attack and you will surprise your opponent with a quick attack to the head. This is not a sure fire technique and your opponent can counter it. When used with discretion, it's godlike. I especially like using this technique against MSS (Magneto/Storm/Sent) because the team doesn't have an anti-air to discourage you from jumping on wake up. Be aware, if your opponent does a meaty attack, you will probably get hit.

New Year Hype in Long Island

Money matches are always exciting. When players know money is on the line, the intensity of the matches skyrocket. This past weekend, there was a money match between Romneto and Phocus. Both players fought well but Romneto came out on top due to his experience and composure. The video below shows some of the hype. Unfortunately the camcorder died, so only the first three matches were captured. This is not intended to display the best MvC2 players in the world, but it does show how much fun we all have at Long Island MvC2 sessions.

There will be a rematch at Syn's next MvC2 Session.

Great matches everyone. Now that I have my own Xbox 360, I will be uploading more matches than ever before. The first to 10 against 'Nxver Die' was a blast, and I plan on having more first to 10 battles vs other players.

MvC2 Online Update: A patch was just released that fixed Cable's unblockable Air Hyper Viper Beam. This is great news for the online Marvel community, and a positive sign of things to come. Thanks to players actively reporting glitches, bugs, and problems to Microsoft we have already seen a marked improvement in the online MvC2 experience. A Quick Look at GGPO

With the release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 online, many people are connecting and playing MvC2 for the first time. While playing MvC2 online is great (we all have been waiting for this since 2001), it's always good to take a break. Another way to play fighting games online is through your computer using a service like GGPO.

GGPO stands for "Good Game Peace Out". It's also a free way to play various games online through your computer. The main website for GGPO is http://ggpo.net/.

To install GGPO you need:

1. Adobe Air
2. The actual GGPO package which you can download from here: http://ggpo.net/download/

Don't forget to open up ports on your computer or router so that GGPO can communicate with the server and your opponents. All of the instructions are on the website.

Before you can play online, you have to create an account and registration is as easy as 1-2-3.

After successfully installing the program, click on the icon which will bring you to this screen:

After you have logged in, you can select a room for the particular game you wish to play or chat it up in the lobby with other like minded gamers. You must have the correct rom (not the infinite) to enter that respective room.

More games will be supported over time. After joining a specific room, just challenge someone to a friendly match. One of the LI MvC2 Blog is about to play a few rounds of (even though they are not too good).

Some other nice features are the built in chat for any match your playing in. Press t and then just punch in your message and hit enter. That's useful if you need a second or wish to trash talk between rounds.

MvC2 Online: Xbox 360 vs PS3

The Xbox 360 version is slightly slower than the Dreamcast port. Although it isn't as fast, the 360 version usually maintains a consistent speed. That provides a high level of leniency when executing combos. The PS3 version, while technically faster than the 360, has noticeable frame dropout and inexplicable input lag as well as dropout. This speed can be quite disorienting when you consider the fact that you have to execute your combos very fast, and even when you press all the right inputs, there is still a decent chance that some of those inputs will not show up in the game.

If you watch the above videos carefully (mostly PS3 matches), you will notice that there are times when the screen will shift unexpectedly and it will look quite strange. This is what happens when one or both players are not seeing the game at the actual speed at which it should be running. There is no real way to compensate for this because it is impossible to detect exactly when and where these shifts will occur. When searching for lobbies online, it is best to join the ones that have a Ping of less than 80. Anything much higher, and you run the risk of teleporting Magneto's and Unblockable everythings.

My experience comes from playing on systems (PS3 & 360) that were each connected to a Cable ethernet cord. Since I used the same connection when trying each system, I gained an objective comparison from my matches. I have not tested how MvC2 plays on wireless connections, so I cannot comment on the speed/reliability of that type of setup.

When playing on PS3 there were several times when my character was full screen away, and my opponent's Magneto literally appeared next to me (just moments later) and was already 10 hits into the Rom. This sort of thing renders the game almost unplayable, but that is not to say that all matches on PS3 are this laggy. As you will see from the above videos, matches with VDO and DaveSmooth ran quite nicely. On the other end of the spectrum, battles with Phil0pia were highly affected by frame dropout and input lag/dropout.

Another issue with online play is people who disconnect when they are about to lose a match. This is commonly referred to as 'Ragequitting'. A most deplorable act, it really kills the fun of the experience. What makes it even worse is the fact that the person who quits does not even get charged with a loss. Many players who reached the highest rankings on Xbox Live did so by quitting before losses.

Overall, MvC2 online is really fun to play. Hopefully, there will be patches released soon that will address some of the major issues with the online experience. The Dreamcast version still stands as the definitive MvC2 model, but it is awesome to be able to battle people across the globe any time you want. Enjoy the match videos, and if you play online, feel free to post your Xbox or PS3 name so I can add you as a friend. Also, if you have video capturing software, it would be great to have more people uploading MvC2 online matches. Most of the people putting up videos are new to the game, and while it is nice that they are presenting MvC2 content, it would be even better if serious players took some time to put up videos.

MvC2 Online Confirmed for Xbox 360 and PS3 (Summer 2009)

It’s based on the Dreamcast code base – While the PS2 and Xbox versions of MvC2 were great, there are a few niggling issues in them that have caused the competitive community to continue using the Dreamcast version of the game. We wanted to bring you the very best version of the game, so we listened to the community and started with the Dreamcast.

2. There is online – With the game being developed by Backbone, we are using largely the same, critically acclaimed net code that we used in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix and with that will come our player match quarter mode/lobby system that has proven so popular. Naturally leaderboards and some form of stats tracking (details to be provided at a later date) will also be in the mix. So on the net code side, you’re pretty much assured the best fighting game net code ever created for consoles.

3. HD upscaling options – Given that most people play Xbox 360s and PS3s on HD TVs, it’s important to help make the game look better. We’ve refined our real-time sprite filtering to use even more advanced techniques and we’re providing two upscaling options for the sprites… one we’ve termed “Crisp” the other we’ve termed “Smooth”. It’s a matter of personal preference for which one you’ll enjoy more. For purists, if you’d like you can use the “Classic” setting, which leaves the sprites completely unfiltered. Because the filtering is applied in real-time, you can change these settings on the fly, mid-match if you choose. Our producer will be showing you some comparison screenshots in the coming days to better clarify the differences. The backgrounds in MvC2 are all 3D, and when rendered at higher resolutions look fantastic. The original textures and assets from the Dreamcast were actually much higher quality than the Dreamcast could really display at the time and when shown in HD, the impact is really quite amazing.

4. Widescreen – Again, with most people playing on HD displays, we wanted to figure out how to implement widescreen support. To do so, the camera field of view was widened (which we’re able to do because of the 3D backgrounds effectively running off the “edges” of the 4:3 scenario) and there are a few camera tricks that minimize any impact on the gameplay. Play area is unchanged, and this is not a zoom and crop like HD Remix was. To put it simply, the gameplay area will be in a 4:3 field, while the viewing area will be widescreen. At the same time, for purists and competitive play, a 4:3 option (with vertical bars on the left and right) still exists.

5. No unlocking – While we love giving people unlockables in games, for this outing, there’s not a lot of surprises in terms of what characters are in the game. All 56 characters will be unlocked at the start for immediate play, again great for tournament play where players won’t need to mess with save game data or hacked versions (/shame).

6. Music Options – We love MvC2 but the original “jazzy” music has long been criticized even by ardent fans. Independent music volume controls and support of custom soundtracks on PS3 and 360 we deemed an important feature. Purists will still have what they love and fans of customization are also served.
